Having grown up witnessing constant episodes of domestic abuse it is with pleasure and without reservation that I work on a voluntary basis as a Mindfulness Meditation Teacher for the Iris Trust, delivering six week Mindfulness Meditation courses.
The Iris Trust is a relatively new charity and provides meditation and relaxation courses for women who have suffered domestic violence.
The Iris Trust’s knowledge and understanding of the dynamics of abusive relationships and the effects this has on one’s emotional and mental state are reflected in the course content, as are the difficulties encountered whilst living in a refuge and starting a new life. High levels of stress related to domestic violence create vulnerability and a lack of self-esteem which can manifest as physical illness.
Ruminating over past experiences, constant fear and worrying about the future can easily lead onto depression and anxiety.
The programme not only promotes awareness of unhealthy thought patterns whilst providing the tools to overcome them, but empowers the self, boosts self confidence and self esteem and enabling far greater relationships with oneself and others.
Recent figures are grim:
This is why it is my privilage to be able to volunteer with the Iris Trust. Find more information about the Iris Trust's work here here.
